Many people have trouble understanding what it takes to activate Meta gems. This guide explains how this is done in plain English.

Latest Update: 2009/04/18

QUICK MENU

1. ACTIVATING META GEMS

Meta Gems (Diamonds) require a combination of coloured gems to activate the special bonuses. To do this, you need a combination of coloured gems from all of the gear that is equipped on your toon.

      For example:

If a Meta Gem says you need 3 blue gems and 3 red gems to activate it, you can actually have a total of 3 purple gems to activate that Meta Gem. The logic of this, is that a purple gem counts for both 1 blue and 1 red. Therefore, 3 purple gems will count as 3 blue gems and 3 red gems.

Another example is if a meta gem needs 3 red and 2 yellow to activate, 3 orange gems will count for both the 3 red needed and 2 yellow needed.

Prismatic Gems count as any-colour. Therefore, it will count towards the activation of a Meta Gem regardless of its colour requirements.

Chaotic Skyflare Diamond requires any combination of x2 Blue Coloured Gems across all equipped gear on your toon. If you have a Jagged Forest Emerald in your Gloves, then a Balanced Twilight Opal in your Chest, this will count toward the Meta Gem activation.

2. GEM COLOUR GROUPING

    Blue Coloured Gems:

    - Purple
    - Green
    - Blue

    Red Coloured Gems:

    - Orange
    - Purple
    - Red

    Yellow Coloured Gems:

    - Orange
    - Green
    - Yellow

    *Prismatic Gems count as ‘all-colours’.

I've been a computer user since my elementary school years in the 1980's. The first gaming computer I used was a Commodore 64. It wasn't until the early 1990's that I had a chance to own my first PC and it wasn't until the mid 1990's that I played my first massive multiplayer online game, which was called MetalKnights. However, since the 1990's, I have played over three dozen MMO games, some of which included Eve Online, D&D Stormreach, Dark Age of Camelot and Tabula Rasa. Since February 2005, I have been an on and off subscriber to WoW. I'm a casual player that solos mainly and occasionally do Heroics and Raids. I have a level 80 Tauren Restoration Shaman and an 80 Tauren Survival & BM Hunter.
